Supra XLR8

Our team, XLR8 consisted of 25 students with a sole goal of designing and fabricating a Formula race car.

General Technical Specifications:

  • Dimension (2.3625m length and 1.70m height) and weight (270kg)
  • Material Specification: AISI 1018 (Side impact, rear suspension, main roll hoop bracings, front bulk head support members) AISI 4130 (Main and front hoop, front bulk head, engine and pedal supports, complete base)
  • KTM 390 Engine (373.2CC, maximum power-43bhp@9000rpm, maximum torque-37Nm@7000rpm, fuel capacity 11litres, 149kg weight, power to weight ratio-216.84HP per ton)

I worked mainly on the braking and marketing sub-system. Brake Design Considerations:

These calculations were done considering the CG for initial weight distribution and dynamic weight distribution during hard braking, while maintaining optimum load transfer. Simultaneously, the force required to move the master cylinder was calculated by using mechanical advantage. Then the pressure on the master cylinder and caliper was found after a number of iterations which helped in selection of the OEM components that best suit our requirement. Further, thermal analysis of the brake disc was done in order to know if any new ducts were necessary and the brake over travel switch was also installed.

Sample calculations and research that I did during the initial stages.
